Sony is in the process of rolling out a new PS5 firmware update beta today, which brings with it the long-awaited integration of Discord. Unfortunately, the implementation isn’t quite as deep as we’d originally hoped, allowing you to join cross-platform party chats – albeit with the use of the popular social network’s official app. Effectively, you’ll need to link your PSN and Discord identities, and then start a voice chat within the aforementioned apps to begin talking.
In the current environment of crossplay releases, Discord is an overdue and welcome addition, but we’d hoped the Japanese giant would streamline the setup, and integrate it entirely into the PS5’s operating system. Furthermore, we’d quietly anticipated the community aspect of Discord – such as the ability to share screenshots and chat with likeminded fans – would make its way onto the console as well. There’s no word of that just yet, however.
Of course, while this is the flagship addition in the latest firmware update, it’s not the only thing on offer. There are some quality of life improvements, like the ability to filter Game Lists, request screen shares from your friends’ profiles, and even join games from Party Chats; VRR expanding to 1440p screens will also please those playing on monitors. Furthermore, we like the ability to manually upload screenshots to the PS App.
Sony’s also transforming the way data transfer works. It’s adding a new PS5 to PS5 transfer utility, which is timely considering the rumours of a revamped hardware model featuring a detachable disc drive. It’s also making it even easier to transfer PS4 save data to PS5, with a variety of new prompts that pull information from the PS Plus cloud and notify you when progress is available. Elsewhere, screen reader improvements continue to showcase the company’s commitment to accessibility.
And then in the UK and USA specifically, it’s adding some new functionality to the existing voice command options. Moving forward, you’ll be able to say “Hey PlayStation, capture that” to save video clips and “Hey PlayStation, start recording” to begin manually capturing gameplay. As a note, all of this technology is still in beta – Sony literally describes it as a Voice Command Preview – and is not available in any other languages right now.
Nevertheless, this sounds like a decent overall beta update. We’re happy to see Discord finally implemented, although given the drawbacks of the integration we’re a little bemused it’s taken this long. Still, the nice quality of life changes will undoubtedly improve the PS5 experience, and that’s a net positive overall.

New save transfers will be popular.
Not sure I'll be needing a lot of this. Especially voice controll. All tech that has that never understands me.
Zero to interest me there, but good to see they are still working on…stuff.
i don’t even think xbox has discord fully integrated to what we all expect , so i really doubt playstation would have it .
@nomither6
To be fair, Sony investing in a minority stake of Discord would get them better access you would expect.
I'll take 1440p vrr. Discord stuff is meh. I continue to say I miss PS communities and activity feed. This Discord rollout has been wack so far.
I wish Sony would increase the number of save files you can put on the Cloud, as the space provided is still way above the number of files you can add to it. I think it's limited to 1,000 save files, which may seem like a lot, but I hit that number a good while ago.
This seems small but i wish in the games collection when you hit the sort and choose to sort by A-Z it would stay to that, but when you shut the system off and come back it defaults back to most recent played. Seems small i know, but it’s a quality of life improvement i would like to see. I could live without the cards also but those aren’t going away anytime soon. Overall the Ui is close to being what it needs to be but i hope they continue to make it faster and leaner as i hate all the bloat the ugly windows 8 xbox uses. I like a clutter free, snappy quick Ui, Sony is close to that.
@nomither6 you can directly talk to discord users from the dashboard /party screen it's fully integrated on Xbox
The best part of the update guys and something that Xbox Series has always done,
Wireless Device Update for DualSense Wireless Controller.
You can now update the DualSense wireless controller device software with a wireless connection. If you have trouble updating the device software wirelessly, connect your controller to your PS5 console using the USB cable to update it. You’ll be able to update wirelessly for the next update.
It just shows it was possible all along, they should of done this as standard. Also, PS5 still doesn't have a dedicated internet browser and media player like Xbox does, absolutely pathetic in 2023.
Not really much here for me, but good for others...
If anybody wants a code for the beta, there should be 4 uses left on this;
26PC-7AND-9NPA
I figured with the wait they were going to do something good with the Discord integration but sounds like they phoned yet another thing in.
@Martsmall yea but can you navigate through channels and servers and share pics/screenshots though ?
The ability to have a disk version of a game installed & then be able to buy the digital version & not have to reinstall it & vice versa is a good update
A way to batch check games for updates & of course themes would be what I want to see next (outside of PS3 emulation which is a pipe dream)
I hope they add FreeSync support in a future update. HDMI 2.1 is still sparse. I bought a brand new 1440p Gsync/FreeSync HDMI 2.0 monitor and would love to hook a PS5 to it. At least they keep making it better so maybe one day it’ll happen.
Why is everyone happy about discord? I never use it.I thought it was just another chat function. Why is it good here when there is already a party chat function?
@Jammsbro because discord is universal, more fun , & better for many people
party chat is archaic
Happy to hear this is edging closer to release!
Beta code for EU (4x left)
M7Q3-NXNX-KNTX
Feel free and enjoy
Discord and Wireless controller updates.
These are the relevant features in my opinion. The rest is more overall polishing and very minor.
@Jammsbro for cross play
@Green-Bandit I was here to say this!
Kinda hoping for a HDMI 2.0 VRR support for the next big update.
There's not many HDMI 2.1 monitors out in the wild.
A lot of cool stuff, but this is my fave:
Wireless Device Update for DualSense Wireless Controller. You can now update the DualSense wireless controller device software with a wireless connection. If you have trouble updating the device software wirelessly, connect your controller to your PS5 console using the USB cable to update it. You’ll be able to update wirelessly for the next update.

@lacerz yepp, this is really the quiet highlight here with this update.
This took over 2 years now to implement… uff. Whatever happy that it has arrived now.
@Snake_V5 What's pathetic in 2023 is someone actually using a browser and media player on a console. The media player and browsers on Xbox are garbage anyway and most people already have several other devices that can play audio/video and have much more capable browsers.
@Almost_Ghostly No, it's not pathetic. And it's good for the console to have an Internet browser because it allows you to watch movies or anime on your TV instead of your phone or tablet.
It is pathetic PS5 not having one, it's 2023. Everything has an Internet browser these days, even the PS3 has one and that was over 15 years ago.
@nomither6 I'll have to give it a go.
@Snake_V5 Huh, I'm able to watch literally hundreds of thousands of movies and anime on my tv though the PS5 without an internet browser. Sounds like user error to me.
@Almost_Ghostly Then you must have Crunchyroll or something. I'm talking about the pirate websites.
@Snake_V5 So you're complaining that you're unable to pirate anime and movies on your PS5 via a web browser? LOL! Okayyyyyyyyyyyy.
@Almost_Ghostly No no, i just think it's bad that the PS5 in 2023 doesn't even have an internet browser when most devices these days do including the PS3 over 15 years ago.
@Snake_V5 You have a browser on every other device, so why worry about it on the PS5? Just kinda saying... who cares? Just use one of many other options.
@Almost_Ghostly Because on the console its on your TV which is bigger than watching it on a smartphone. Who watches Anime or movies on a phone?
@Snake_V5 I didn't say to watch on a smart phone. I was saying there are plenty of other options to watch on your tv. Including, but certainly not limited to, casting from your phone to your tv. C'mon mate. You're severely nitpicking not having a browser on a single device, when even on that same device there are plenty of options to watch anime and movies. PLUS your other devices that have a browser that will allow to to watch on your tv.
@Almost_Ghostly 😔
